1. The Heart of the Lamp: Fiberglass Instead of Cotton
Many people blindly assume that every oil lamp has a cotton wick. But did you know that many modern, high-quality oil lamps use a fiberglass wick? This makes a crucial difference to how your lamp performs.
A traditional cotton wick burns over time and needs to be replaced. A fiberglass wick works completely differently: the material functions purely as a straw (capillary action). It draws up the oil, after which the heat of the flame causes the oil to evaporate. Only these oil gases burn, not the wick itself. When used correctly, a fiberglass wick will therefore last a lifetime.
2. Why Pure Paraffin Oil Makes the Difference
For systems with a fiberglass wick, pure paraffin oil is almost always recommended instead of standard (cheap) lamp oil. But why is that?
